Dr. Furuta’s notable projects include the Ensemble Digital Library, Walden’s Paths, Digital Humanities-centered projects, and Trellis.
Dr. Furuta’s service has included numerous contributions to the Digital Libraries and related research areas. He served as the Chair of ACM SIGWEB from 1993 to 1997, member of the ACM SIG Governing Board from 1997 to 2001, and Chair of the IEEE-CS Technical Committee on Digital Libraries from 2010 to 2013. He was Conference Chair of Digital Libraries ’94, one of the first conferences in the area, and Program Chair for its successor, Digital Libraries ’95. He served as Program Chair for ACM ACM Digital Libraries 2000, which followed from those initial conferences, and has been Program Chair for the IEEE/ACM Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) in 2009, 2016, and 2019. He has been a member of the Steering Committee for JCDL since its founding in 2000 and served as its chair from 2001 to 2005. Dr. Furuta is an Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal on Digital Libraries, a position he has held since 2001. He also was United States Editor for Electronic Publishing: Origination, Dissemination and Design from 1990 to 1998.
Dr. Furuta received the B.A. degree from Reed College in 1974, the M.S.degree in Computer Science from the University of Oregon in 1978, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1986.
